Blues Alley recently had a fire, but Lisa Fischer burned the house down all over again. I learned of Fischer through a documentary about her backup singing in the Rolling Stones. Now she has her own solo career. I’ve seen Lisa Fischer perform several times, but this was the best!

She has an amazing expressive range. At one point, she asked the audience to call out songs and she sang a minute of each. One was the corny ballad, Misty. What she did with that song!

Her band also performed innovative arrangements of songs like Sting’s “Fragile” and the Police “Message in a Bottle.” On these songs, the drummer performed solos that would have made Stewart Copeland proud, and I think Sting himself might have preferred Lisa’s version of Fragile.

We were treated to a set and a half because the bass player broke a string, and that caused delays, so they let us into both the early and the late show.

Below is a photo of Lisa pointed to me (it seemed!) as she sang “Addicted to Love.” Psst, don’t tell Audrey!
