Guitars Night: Meza & Wilson

I love the summer delight of cruising over to the Stanford Campus for the evening concerts at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, a jazz camp for kids. I particularly like concerts in the Campbell Recital Hall, an intimate space with ideal acoustics On this particular evening, we celebrated Jacob’s birthday by making homemade gluten-free pizzas, perfect tomatos with basil, and grilled veggies. Delicious!

Monday night is usually not the best for music, but this night of two guitars was exceptional. We did not have tickets in advance to this sold-out show, but took our chances on rush tickets. And we got in.

Camila Meza opened the set with passionate latin-inspired music. She has a beautiful voice and sang on most of the tunes, often in Spanish. Her own compositions were wonderful and she also played a standard and a blazing fast tune by an Argentina composer.

Dan Wilson led the second set, with a band he had never played with nor rehearsed with. But do not fear, the band featured all-stars who were teaching at the camp including Taylor Eigsti and Jeremy Pelt. At times it was a little rough, because the charts were fast and complex. But also very fresh and exciting. We liked his compositions in particular.
