As the culmination of a great family visit with Amy, Len, Isla and Jack, we toured the Washington Monument. We were blessed with a very clear day and great views in every direction. After passing through security (some guy failed to get through with a large purple scissors), we were whisked 90 seconds up in an elevator to the top.

Jefferson Memorial and the Tidal Basin (South)

The Potomac River flows out beyond the memorial. <# Jefferson Memorial from the Washington Monument #>

National Mall & the Capitol (East)

Smithsonian buildings parade along the Mall towards the Capitol, flanked by the bastions of bureaucracy. <# The US Capitol from the Washington Monument #>

White House (North)

We live in this direction, about 2 miles north of the White House. I still love that I can ride a bike to the White House about 20 minutes. <# White House from the Washington Monument #>

Lincoln Memorial (West)

The World War II Memorial is in the front, followed by the Reflecting Pool, and then the Lincoln Monument <# Lincoln Memorial from the Washington Monument #>

We went to see Uncle Abe the night before; he was looking good. <# Abe Lincoln at night #>

The Tour Ends

We really had a wonderful visit with Amy, Len, Jack and Isla (and Ollie will be especially said not to have Isla around). We had a great time doing things together in the capital.
