Peak cherry blossoms were waiting for us when we arrived this year in Washington, DC. After a few days of rain, we awoke to a glorious Sunday morning. Audrey and I hopped on the city bikes (with helmets, of course), and rode 30 minutes to the National Mall. We were greeted by peak crowds, all trying to get to Tidal Basin that surrounds the Jefferson Memorial.

Hundreds of crossing guards were out to guide the throngs. As we waited our turn to cross the street, a man in a car asked “why the traffic? what’s going on?” To which the crossing guard exclaimed in disbelief, you’re not from around here??? Its cherry blossoms!!!

In a slightly quieter glade filled with blossoming trees, we stopped to take some pictures and Audrey obliged with a few poses. Soon we began to get great classic views of the Jefferson Memorial. Although crowded, the atmosphere was festive. It was a big city party in celebration of spring.

We did eventually make to see Thomas Jefferson in his architectural splendor. But the blossoms stole the show. I couldn’t stop snapping images. Many people were all dressed up to take family photos, including a Japanese girl who found a puddle to create a reflection.
