Today I discovered Blagden Alley, a hotspot for murals in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington DC. The March winds were blowing slowly, the sky was blue, and the sun was warm. A perfect day for exploring with a camera.

First stop: the watermelon house.

Then, entering the alley, I came upon this arresting sticker, placed on a water pipe.

If its Washington DC, its got to be “Politics and Art.” Yes, “RISKTAKER!”

The Blagden area is actually a set of intersecting alleys that fill a whole city block, with art on many of the buildings. And, course, a coffeeshop in the middle. From the iconic “love” mural in psychedelic colors to the Lorax, I found so much to see. Don’t miss the plaque to the “enigmatic insomniac.” Wandering around Blagden Alley was like a trip to a street art museum. In fact, it is a museum.

After I left, I travelled up 11th Street NW, and found a bit more of DC politics. A house was painted with a mural advocating Statehood for Washington DC, rising above the red stop lights.
